Behind our 3rd door awaits something that warms my heart anew every year: a baked apple crumble that not only smells heavenly but is also super easy to make.
I love apples – really! – and I prefer to buy them at our weekly market here in Hamburg. There I often find these beautiful red varieties that already smell like winter when you cut into them. It’s exactly from these that I especially like to conjure up this little oven delight.
The best thing about this recipe: It looks like a little Advent miracle, but actually it’s prepared in just a few minutes. A few apple cubes, some cinnamon, vanilla, and a handful of ingredients for the crumble – that’s all it takes. And a little tip from me: The crumble fits perfectly in our small Eulenschnitt tart pan – not only does it look especially pretty in it, but it also bakes beautifully evenly. And while the crumble turns golden brown in the oven, the kitchen fills with this scent that feels like an invitation to a cozy winter evening.
Maybe you're like me – sometimes it's just nice to enjoy something warm and homemade without much effort. This recipe is perfect for exactly that.
Ingredients
For the apples
- 1.5 red apples
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- ½ packet vanilla sugar
- (Optional) a pinch of finely grated orange peel
For the crumble
- 25 g sliced almonds
- 50 g cold butter (in small pieces)
- 25 g brown sugar
- 40 g soft oats
- 20 g spelt flour
- 1 pinch of salt
For serving (optional)
- 100 g whipped cream or vanilla ice cream

Preparation
First preheat the oven to 200 °C top/bottom heat. While the oven warms up, you can prepare the apples: wash them, core them, and cut them into small cubes. Then mix the apple pieces with cinnamon, vanilla sugar, and – if you like – some finely grated orange peel. After that, put everything into a small ovenproof dish. Our small tart pan is just perfect for this.

For the streusel, put butter, sugar, oats, flour, salt, and the almonds into a bowl and rub everything with your fingers into a crumbly dough – imperfect streusel are absolutely welcome here. Then generously spread the finished crumble over the prepared apples in the dish.

Now the crumble goes into the oven for about 25 minutes until the streusel are golden brown and crispy and the apples underneath are juicy and bubbling. Best enjoyed warm – maybe even with a spoonful of freshly whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

So simple. So cozy. So winter. I wish you lots of joy baking, trying out, and enjoying.
Your Lisa from Eulenschnitt
